Paris Olympics 2024 — Day 6
There has been plenty of drama on the sixth day of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Simone Biles won her second gold medal of the Paris Games — and her sixth Olympic gold overall — by beating Rebeca Andrade in a thrilling women’s gymnastics all-around final.
In the pool, Katie Ledecky made history as the most decorated female Olympian in American history as the U.S. took silver behind Australia in the women's 4x200 free relay.
There were emotional scenes at Roland Garros as Andy Murray’s career ended with defeat alongside Dan Evans in the last eight of the Olympic men’s doubles. Earlier on, Iga Swiatek was upset by Zheng Qinwen in the Paris Olympics semifinals.

3x3 basketball: U.S. men fall to 0-4
The United States men's 3x3 basketball team have fallen to a 0-4 record after a heartbreaking 21-19 loss to Latvia.
The U.S led most of the game and actually played better without Jimmer Fredette, who is out due to injury, but couldn't hold on to take their first win at Paris 2024.
Latvia, who improved to 4-0, were led by Nauris Miezis with 10 points, six rebounds and four two-pointers.
The U.S. men have three games left, against France and China on Friday and against the Netherlands on Sunday.

Tennis: Djokovic fears meniscus tear injury recurrence
Seven weeks after tearing his meniscus so badly he needed surgery and pulled out of his quarterfinal at the French Open, Novak Djokovic suffered more knee problems on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros, this time during his quarterfinal match against Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Djokovic took medication and had the help of adrenaline (and, it appeared, a hefty dose of psychological scarring for the Greek) to get him through the match, escaping deficits of 4-0 and 5-3, 40-0 in the second set to win 6-3, 7-5 and keep his hopes of an elusive gold medal alive, but it came at a price.
How steep that price is won’t be known until Djokovic undergoes further tests ahead of his semifinal match, which is scheduled for Friday evening against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, but he sounded seriously worried following the win over Tsitsipas.
“I’m concerned about the state of the knee. I cannot give you exact information because I don’t have it,” he said.
“I have to go and examine the knee now with my physio and with the medical staff of the tournament and then let’s see, I’m playing at seven tomorrow which gives me slightly more time, but I’m hoping I can be ready.”
Griner on U.S.-Russia prisoner swap: ‘This is a big win, huge win’
Brittney Griner had just come off the court after the United States women's basketball team beat Belgium in group play when she was asked about her reaction to the news that Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan were part of a massive prisoner swap between Russia and several Western countries.
“It’s a great day,” Griner said. “I am head over heels happy for the families right now. Any day that Americans come home, that’s a win. I’m just happy. Like this is a big win, huge win.”
Griner spent most of 2022 under Russian detainment after she was found traveling with a small amount of hashish oil in her luggage as she went to join her UMMC Ekaterinburg team. The U.S. government declared her to be wrongfully detained, a classification that allowed the government to negotiate her release before a trial or conviction.
Still, that August she was found guilty of smuggling drugs with criminal intent and sentenced to nine years in a penal colony. Four months later, the United States secured a prisoner swap, bringing Griner home in exchange for the Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who had been serving a 25-year sentence in a U.S. federal prison.
Tennis: Andy Murray signs off in typical style
Weather delays in Paris
It's past 11pm in Paris and we may not get many more results today as lightning and rain have suspended play in beach volleyball and 3x3 basketball.
Basketball: U.S. beat Belgium, book quarterfinal spot
The United States women have beaten Belgium 87-74 in their second group game, improving to 2-0 and clinching a spot in the quarterfinals.
Sabrina Ionescu hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to increase the margin of victory before making a shush gesture, prompting loud whistles from the pro-Belgium crowd.
Before the knockout stages, the U.S. will take on Germany in their final group game on Sunday – the winner of that game will top Group C.

Basketball: Stewart and Wilson leading the way for U.S.
Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson have both scored more than 20 points for the second consecutive game. With 2:05 to play, Stewart has 26 points while Wilson has 21. Both have become the first American players since Lisa Leslie in 2004 to score more than 20 points in consecutive Group Phase or Preliminary Round games. They are also the first American players since Teresa Edwards in 1988 to open an Olympics with consecutive 20-point games.
Swimming: Ledecky becomes most decorated American woman in Olympic history
Katie Ledecky has become the most decorated woman in American Olympic history, earning a silver medal as part of the U.S. women’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay and giving her 13 Olympic medals throughout her illustrious career. Australia earned gold and China took bronze in the relay.

This Belgium squad isn't afraid of Team USA and is taking it to them at the moment. Team USA has turned the ball over 15 times and looked out of sync defensively at times.
However, they still lead going into the fourth quarter. Napheesa Collier hit back-to-back big shots to disrupt Belgium's run.
Belgium star and former WNBA All-Star Emma Meesseman leads all scorers with 20 points but they trail 60-53.
Breanna Stewart leads the U.S. in scoring with 19 points and has been dominant from the opening tip.
Team USA is looking for its 57th consecutive Olympic win.
Tennis: Novak Djokovic another step closer
Novak Djokovic has won just about everything it's possible to win in tennis. But an Olympic gold medal has long eluded him.
That could be about to change in Paris, however. Because Djokovic has beaten Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, 6-3 7-6 (3), to set up a semi-final against Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.
Fencing: Kiefer and Scruggs win gold for the United States
The American fencing revolution continues. Lee Kiefer and Lauren Scruggs led the U.S. to gold in the women's foil team event on Thursday, beating Italy 45-39 in the gold-medal match.
Kiefer and Scruggs faced each other in the women's foil individual final, with Kiefer winning. It marks the first time the Americans have ever won multiple gold medals in fencing in a single Olympics.
With Nick Itkin also winning bronze in men's foil, that gives the U.S. four total medals in fencing, tied for the most the Americans have had in the modern Olympic era. The U.S. has two remaining shots for medals, in the men's team foil and the women's team sabre.

Basketball: Better news for the U.S. 3x3 team
While the 5x5 team is at halftime, the U.S. 3x3 team collected its first win of pool play, beating Spain 17-11. This is the first time the Americans have held their opponents under 17 points in Paris. At 1-3, the U.S. is tied for seventh in the 3x3 standings with three pool games to go, and the top six advance to the knockout rounds.
Tennis: Murray’s tennis career ends in Olympic doubles defeat
Andy Murray’s tennis career ended the way it does for everybody else: a ball that bounced where he didn’t want it to bounce.
After two scarcely believable escapes at Roland Garros, the 2024 Paris Olympics saw off one of the greatest British tennis players in history, as Murray and Dan Evans succumbed to the bruising power of Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, 6-2, 6-4.
When it was done, the three-time Grand Slam champion and double Olympic gold medallist gathered his belongings at the side of the court, before taking in the adulation one last time. There were no tears today. He simply holstered his bag, turned to the crowd, and kicked his feet through the orange, pausing to sign autographs at the side of the venue like he had done so many times before. It wasn’t all that special. Special wasn’t particularly the point.
Outranked by two players with ATP titles this season, both inside the top 20, and coming off Wimbledon quarterfinal runs, Murray and Evans were simply made to look inferior after two matches in which they had defied the odds to an almost ludicrous extent.
Basketball: Americans up eight at the break
HT: Belgium 38-46 United States
Ten turnovers in the first half have prevented the U.S. from blowing this game open, but behind 25 combined points from Stewart and Wilson, the Americans are up eight at the break, 46-38. They're outrebounding Belgium 27-12, but they haven't taken many more field-goal attempts because of all of the giveaways.
Tennis: Sir Andy Murray’s glorious career comes to a close
It’s the end of the road for one of Britain’s finest ever athletes.
Sir Andy Murray and Dan Evans have repeatedly got themselves out of trouble at this Olympics — but not this time.
They lose 6-2, 6-3 to the American duo of Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz in the men’s doubles.
What a run the British duo both had in Paris. And what a fun end to such a brilliant career for Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion who said before this tournament that this one will be his last.
Basketball: Cheryl Reeve determined to play big
Q2 4:46 Belgium 29-40 United States
One constant for Team USA through its first two games has been Cheryl Reeve’s insistence on playing big. The Americans have had three bigs (from the group of A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Brittney Griner, Alyssa Thomas, and Napheesa Collier) on the floor at all times, even if the spacing is a bit wonky as a result. The USA has only taken four 3-pointers thus far while its nominal small forwards Jackie Young and Kahleah Copper remain glued to the bench.

Tennis: Here we go again …?
Sir Andy Murray and Dan Evans have defended yet another match point in the Olympics men’s tennis tournament!
How do they keep doing it…
Trailing 5-2 in the second set, having lost the first 6-2, they break Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz for the first time today to keep their flickering Olympic hopes alive.
Surely even these two won’t be able to turn this one around?
Basketball: Emma Meesseman should need no reintroduction
Thursday’s Belgium-USA contest might serve as a re-introduction for American fans to Emma Meesseman, the 2019 WNBA Finals MVP. But rest assured, those on the American side didn't need any reminding.
Although she hasn't played in the WNBA since 2022, Meesseman has been the EuroLeague Women MVP in each of the past two seasons, playing either with or against a number of stars of Team USA including Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray and Alyssa Thomas.
Through one quarter on Thursday, Meesseman already has six points and two assists, though she has one foul.
Basketball: Perimeter players yet to show up for USA
End of quarter 1: Belgium 23-23 United States
The strength of the American team is supposed to be its depth, but the backcourt has yet to show up against Belgium. Not only were the perimeter players scoreless for Team USA for the first nine minutes, but each has been powerless to stop Julie Vanloo, who has seven points for the de facto home team in Lille.
